Preclassic ceramics from the central highlands
Middle to late Preclassic (800 B.C. - 250 A.D.)

Preclassic pottery is characterized by a large variety of shapes and finishes. For the most part the materials are monochrome although some may present red or black paint. The decoration may include incised motifs and often the vessels are modeled into animal shapes. The Usulutan style stands out for its decorative technique, which features light-colored parallel lines on an orange background.
